PAROWAN, Iron County — Part of I-15 was shut down and a man was in critical condition Monday after he drove his truck up and off the ramp of a tow truck, police said.

The tow truck was stopped along the median of northbound I-15 south of Parowan about 6:20 p.m., along with Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Ryan Bauer, in response to an earlier crash when the man approached in his pickup truck, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce.

The truck sideswiped the UHP vehicle with the sergeant inside, then continued partially up and off the ramp of the tow truck, Royce said. The truck, which was full off roofing supplies, rolled several times across the freeway into the median, scattering roofing nails and other materials.

The driver of the pickup truck sustained severe head injuries and was taken in critical condition by medical helicopter to a Salt Lake City hospital. Officials believe alcohol contributed to the crash.

Northbound I-15 was closed temporarily while crews cleaned up the crash.

And people wonder why we don't like alcohol. This is a perfect example. Thank goodness there wasn't a family or anyone else injured. It's the time of year to be extra vigilant when driving as there will be more imbibing than usual. Drive defensively, and stay safe everyone.
