Doug Robinson: Best and worst of the college football season (24 items)

Dec. 12, 2013

It's time to review the people and events we'll remember from the 2013 college football season.

Presenting the Best and the Worst — and other dubious awards — for the college football season ...

Doug Robinson's columns run on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Email:

1 of 24. Coach of the year

Matt Wells. He took over as head coach after the departure of Gary Andersen and led Utah State to the Mountain West Conference championship game despite losing star quarterback Chuckie Keeton to injury at mid-season. The Aggies are bowl bound with an 8-5 record. This marks the first time in 33 years the Aggies have produced three consecutive winning seasons.

2 of 24. Best right-handed imitation of Tim Tebow

Taysom Hill runs like Tebow; unfortunately, he also throws like Tebow.

3 of 24. Most improved player

Taysom Hill. His passing is a work in progress, but there is progress.

4 of 24. Worst storyline

The fire-Whittingham sentiment that turned up on the Internet at the end of the season. Really? This is the guy who made the Utes worthy of Pac-12 membership and now there are fans who want his job?

5 of 24. Best/worst schedule (depending on your point of view)

Utah’s schedule included five teams ranked in the final BCS rankings — No. 5 Stanford, No. 10 Oregon, No. 14 Arizona State, No. 17 UCLA, No. 25 USC. Good thing the Utes played a full in-state schedule: Three of their five wins came against Utah schools.

This article was a waste of time. Terrible, absolutely terrible.

Here's another "worst": Hiring Anae (again) who installed a pointless "hurry-up" offense that only sped up bad play calling and execution.

One other: Chris B's prognostications which had the U. in a major bowl with few losses. Actually that was the best - seeing him off by a mile and starting to be elsewhere vs. posting on every single BYU story.

Careful what you wish for if you want Kyle Whit to get fired. I still like him and HOPING to have him at BYU as a coach only if Bronco M. would be okay to move over to D Coach and HC Cordinater for recuiting (yes, he should do the Fireside too).

DEW Cougars, the "Fire Whit" comments only come from Cougar fans (like you) who want Kyle as their new HC, and from local media trying to drum up a story.

It drives both of those groups nuts that Utah fans and administration are so patient. It is absolutely valid to examine an organization and see where it can improve. But to have a starting point of "someone needs to be fired", well, that's kind of a Bronco thing. Hasn't he fired more coaches than anyone else in the state?

Robinson is just another Whittingham apologist who can't take an objective look at the state of the Utes.

Look at all the negative you posted about Utah in that Best of/Worst of slideshow. And you somehow think Whittingham isn't at fault for any of it? Please.

Urban Meyer made this program Pac 12 worthy. Whittingham is just running it into the ground.

Time for a competent coach here.
