Christmas light displays are one of the most popular ways to celebrate the holidays in Utah.

With Christmas right around the corner, friends and family might be coming into town to share the holiday season. Enjoy the splendor of the season by visiting these popular light displays across the state.

1 of 17. Temple Square, Salt Lake City

Located in Salt Lake City, the lights at Temple Square is one of the most popular locations for visitors during the holiday season. The tradition of putting Christmas lights up across Temple Square started in 1965 and has grown in size and popularity for nearly five decades.

Entrance to see the lights and nativity scenes around Temple Square is free. The lights were turned on Nov. 29 and will be shining through Dec. 31, 2013.

2 of 17. City Creek Center

City Creek is lit up during the holidays, and features Santa's Lantern near the food court on the east side of the mall.

Santa will be visiting from Nov. 21-Dec. 24 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Photos with Santa are available for purchase at the lantern.

City Creek Center also has a decorated tree, fire fountain shows and window displays to enjoy.

3 of 17. Gateway Mall

The Gateway Mall near Temple Square and City Creek Center features a Christmas tree that is more than 50 feet tall and decorated with hundreds of thousands of LED lights.

During the holiday season, visitors can enjoy a light show at the Olympic Legacy Fountain, located near the north entrance of the mall. The lights and fountain show play to a variety of traditional Christmas songs. The show begins on the hour from 5-8 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Santa is also visiting at The Discovery Gateway Children's Museum, Monday through Saturday from noon to 8 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. Visitors can have brunch with Santa on Dec. 21 from 8-10 a.m., and Sunday, Dec. 22 from 10 a.m. to noon. 4 of 17. Zoo Lights at Hogle Zoo

The Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City celebrates the season with its light event "Zoo Lights" Nov. 30 through Dec. 31. The light display tradition began six years ago, with millions of lights shining throughout the zoo. Because the lights are on after the zoo's normal operating hours, the lights are the focus instead of the animals. However, some animals are more active at night and will be visible.

Zoo Lights are open Sunday to Wednesday, 5:30-8 p.m. (grounds close at 9 p.m.), and Thursday to Saturday from 5:30-9 p.m. (grounds close at 10 p.m.). The zoo is closed on Christmas Day.

5 of 17. This is the Place Heritage Park

Located nearly across the street from Hogle Zoo, This Is the Place Heritage Park commemorates the holiday season with its Candlelight Christmas event. The park display is open from 5:00-9:00 p.m., Monday-Saturday evenings until Dec. 23.

Candlelight Christmas features Father Christmas, activities for children, as well as performances from The Heritage Village Carolers.
