The BYU men's team continues to lead the state in terms of the computer rankings, still at an respectable No. 40 in the CBSsportsline.com's RPI. Utah State and Utah (93 and 133) are next best.

The UVU Wolverines at No. 151 might have the best shot at the NCAA Tournament because they have an early lead in the WAC with a 4-0 record.

On the women's side, the Cougars host two conference opponents while Utah, USU and SUU hover around .500.

Sagarin rankings, which byu fans usually prefer, show Utah and byu relatively close, with byu at 42 and Utah at 42

For those in love with RPI, here is something to consider. A month into the season byu had a better rpi than Duke, Louisville, Kentucky and Michigan State. All 4 of those teams were ranked and byu was not, even with a higher RPI.

Perhaps the experts just forgot about byu.

Or

RPI doesn't mean much until the end of the season. A byu fan bragging about RPI since day 1 as they have is like a WAC football team bragging about how amazing their schedule is when they play an SEC team week 1 and mocking the SEC team for playing a couple WAC nobodies the first couple weeks of the season.

The WCC is rated currently the 10th "best" league in the country by ESPN

The Pac 12 is rated 3rd.

So for WAC teams, lets not get too prideful in bragging about playing a good out of conference schedule. Conference schedules means MORE than out of conference. And there is a big difference between the 3rd best conference in the country and the 10th.

From ESPN on why they have a BPI basketball power index as opposed to other systems:

"Other power rankings already exist, the most prominent being the RPI, Sagarin Ratings, Massey Ratings and Ken Pomeroy's ("Kenpom") ratings. All of these methods are based upon the outcomes of games, their location -- home/road/neutral -- and the quality of opponents. Each one basically puts these together in slightly different ways and arrives at slightly different results.

RPI, due to its simplicity, tends to be the biggest decision aid for the NCAA tournament committee, even though it doesn't account for the actual scores of games. Kenpom and our BPI system both account for the varying pace that teams can play, which is an important analytical component of evaluating basketball teams. But we believe the BPI is a little more refined than any other existing power ranking"

correction to Sagarain,

I mistyped. It has byu 42 and Utah 62 currently. The gap has been closing rapidly as Utah plays a very hard conference schedule and byu plays in the 10 "best" conference in the nation with mostly weak cupcakes. The Pac 12 is the 3rd best in the nation, per ESPN.

After the road games in Arizona, one will be able to to sweep what is left of the Ute basketball team into a paper bag.
