The top 25 second-round picks in the NBA draft since 1989 (25 items)

The second round doesn't carry too much glitz or glamor for basketball fans, but it is the perfect way to build a roster. If the right choices are made, then the second round can be used to round out a championship team. All you have to do to prove that point is look at the roster for the San Antonio Spurs. Jeff Ayres, Matt Bonner, Patty Mills, Danny Green and Manu Ginobili were all selected in the second round.

Back in the early days of the draft, there were plenty of hall-of-famers available in the second round and later. Although that kind of talent hasn't come out of the second round consistently since the draft shrunk to two rounds in 1989, there have been some great players.

Here is a look at the best of those second-round picks in the current system, including some great Jazz players.

1 of 25. 25. Marcin Gortat

Gortat was taken with the 27th pick in the second round (57th overall) by the Phoenix Suns in the 2005 draft. Gortat has played seven seasons in the NBA for the Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns and the Washington Wizards. His most impressive season came with the Suns in 2011-12 when he averaged 15.4 points, 10 rebounds and 1.5 blocks while starting all 66 games of the lockout-shortened season.

To this point in his career, Gortat has averaged 9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 438 games (224 starts).

2 of 25. 24. Nikola Pekovic

Pekovic was taken with the first pick of the second round (31st overall) by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2008 draft. Pekovic has played his entire four-year career with the Timberwolves. His most impressive statistical season came in 2013-14 when he averaged 17.5 points and 8.7 rebounds in 54 games.

To this point in his career, Pekovic has averaged 13 points and 6.8 rebounds in 228 games (162 starts).

3 of 25. 23. Isaiah Thomas

Thomas was selected with the 30th pick in the second round (60th overall) by the Sacramento Kings in the 2011 draft. Thomas has played three seasons in a Kings uniform and has proved to be a remarkable find with the last pick in the draft. His most impressive season came in 2013-14 when he averaged 20.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 1.3 steals in 72 games.

To this point in his career, Thomas has averaged 15.3 points, 2.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists and one steal in 216 games (153 starts).

Scola was taken with the 27th pick in the second round (55th overall) by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2002 draft. Scola has played seven years in the league for the Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns and the Indiana Pacers. His most impressive season came with the Rockets in 2010-11 when he averaged 18.3 points on 50.4 percent shooting from the floor, 8.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 74 games.

To this point in his career, Scola has averaged 13.2 points on 50.1 precent shooting, 7.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 550 games (412 starts).

Douglas was taken with the first pick in the second round (28th overall) by the Miami Heat in the 1989 draft. Douglas played 12 seasons in the NBA for the Heat, Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, New Jersey Nets and the Los Angeles Clippers. His most impressive season came with the Heat in 1990-91 when Douglas averaged 18.5 points on 50.4 percent shooting from the field, 2.9 rebounds, 8.5 assists (ninth in the league), and 1.7 steals in 73 games.

For his career, Douglas averaged 11 points, 2.2 rebounds, 5.9 assists and one steal in 765 games (482 starts).
