LDS General Conference

Kristin Murphy, Deseret News

General conference is a semiannual gathering of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

General conference is held on the first weekend in April and October in Salt Lake City. During general conference weekend, church members receive instruction from leaders in a series of two-hour sessions.

The first conference was held on June 1, 1830, a little less than two months after the church was organized in the same Peter Whitmer Sr. home in Fayette, N.Y., in which the organization took place. Records indicate 27 church members were present for the conference, along with 30-40 others who were interested in the proceedings.

Today, general conference is held in the 21,000-seat Conference Center. The proceedings are broadcast to the church's 15 million members in more than 90 languages.
