Pioneer Day

Sons of Utah Pioneers walk in the Days of '47 Parade in Salt Lake City on Monday, July 25, 2011.

Laura Seitz, Deseret News

On July 24, 1847, the more than 1,000-mile journey of the first group of Mormon pioneers drew to a close when they entered the Salt Lake Valley.

The first statewide Pioneer Day celebration was held July 23 and 24 in 1857, 10 years after the pioneers began to settle along the Wasatch Front.

Since that 1857 celebration, the tradition has continued, growing into a spectacle of rodeos, pageants and fireworks. The Days of '47 Parade is the longest-running parade in the state and one of the longest-running parades in the nation.
